Gary Carden, a renown regional storyteller, is writing a play about the tragedy that took the lives of convicts forced to dig the train tunnel north and west of Dillsboro in the 19th century. I met up with Gary on an icy morning about a month ago at Monteith Farmstead Park. He told me about this deadly incident and the horrific conditions endured by prisoners over a century ago. This is just one of many, many stories from the “Place of the Turtle” — as the Cherokees used to call our river — that are yet to be told to a broad audience.
I recommend that you link to Tuck Rising Play on Facebook, look it over, and consider giving it a “Like.”
STAY WARM. The thermometer at my house registered 0 degrees this morning.
