Kids in Tuckasegee River Youth Workshop will enjoy first Fish Snorkeling in Oconaluftee
Fish Snorkeling with WATR!
When: This Sunday, May 17 at 1:30 pm to 3:30 – 4:00 pm —
Where: St. Francis Church, Cherokee, and the Oconaluftee River –
There will be a short wrap-up of the Cane and Weir Youth Workshop – and then we will go look for fish in the river!
WATR has wet suits, goggles and snorkels for everyone! After suiting up, we will go across the road and into the river. There you can look around underwater – and see the fishes. Maybe you will see a redhorse fish, so important to the ancient Cherokee diet. Maybe a trout or a knotty head.
You will be walking in 2 – 3 feet of water… THEN floating in your wet suit, and watching the fish beneath you. In the shallow river, there will be little swimming – just wading! BUT YOU MUST FEEL COMFORTABLE IN THE WATER!
What to bring:
We will have changing rooms in the Church. Best to wear – the clothes that you will get wet in. Wear a T shirt, shorts, underwear, socks and athletic shoes/sneakers (no sandals). First, take off your shoes, then slip on a wetsuit – Farmer John-style. The wetsuits come over your shoulders, but no sleeves. The wetsuit has no stockings, so put socks and your own shoes. Bring a change of clothes in a backpack or plastic bag. When you get out of the river you can change into your dry clothes.
Please reply — tell us if you are coming or not. There may be room for some friends to join us, too. Not sure. Email to: rogerclapp@WATRnc.org
