Volunteer teams and individuals are invited to do a rivers-&-roads cleanup as part of the statewide BIG SWEEP. Activities are organized through the Watershed Association of the Tuckasegee River. The target streams are Scotts and Savannah Creeks, although some volunteer teams may want to scout and work on creeks and roads in their communities. In Swain, the target will be Deep Creek. Wear sturdy shoes and work gloves, especially for stream-bank helpers. Individuals who want to wade should wear boots or waders.
WCU students can participate before fall break. From Saturday September 8 through Friday September 14 students can work as teams for community service stewardship. Students should pre register and sign releases.
On the BIG SWEEP day, Scotts and Savannah Creek teams should gather at Monteith Farmstead Park in Dillsboro for directions, plastic bags, and to turn in releases. Deep Creek teams should gather at the Pavilion next to the Admin Building. Neighborhood teams will be coordinated before the event. Youth need parental permission.. Some waders and gloves will be available. Register with WATR at (828) 507-9144 or info@WATRnc.org.
