WATR volunteers and partners pickup garbage along creeks and roads
On Saturday April 18, WATR teams split up to attack stream garbage, as our contribution to the Annual WCU Tuck River Cleanup.
- The Scott Creek team pulled a trailer full of illegally disposed trash. It came from wrongful dumping in a location across the creek from our Discovery Trails.
- The Baumgardner Branch team pulled a pickup full of junk from the creek between Ingles (on Rt 107) and the DOT facility.
- Operating independently, Dale Campbell extracted a heavy tire from the Branch.
- Later, Team Epsilon Tau Pi (Fraternity of Eagle Scouts) under the leadership of WCU student Pasquale Scotto DiClemente, collected bags of roadside litter on Rt 107. Way to go Pasquale and your troops!
Two weeks later — SWAIN CLEAN — rallied an impressive 50 (plus) volunteers to round up road trash during Saturday morning. They collected over 150 bags of trash. Hooray for SWAIN CLEAN leaders Chris Roth, Tom Anema, their spouses, and other leaders on their first event. The next cleanup is June 27 — !!!
In the afternoon, teams in three rafts (borrowed from NOC) picked up trash from Darnell Farms down to the middle of Bryson City. Total weight of garbage — 1340 pounds. Three cheers for leadership by
- Dale Campbell
- Dennis White
- Brad Walker
- Wayner Dickert
Lot’s to be proud of — this year WATR has pulled out 9224 pounds of garbage — that’s 4.6 tons!
