January:

  • Wed, Feb 5, WATR Challenge to Students 2014       When: **6:00-7:30, Where: Tucks Tap & Grill – Cullowhee  ***Great turnout – Group of 4 WCU students traveled to Locust Creek on Sat. 2/8 for clean-up.  Collected over 800 pounds of trash.  Others signed up for SMIE macro-invert monitoring.****
  •  Thu, Feb 13 20, WATR urges that — “Jackson Conservation Voters  attend a Planning Board Public Hearing regarding the proposed changes to the Mountain & Hillside Development Ordinance (think steep slopes).”  See the recent WATR blog.  All speakers were opposed to the proposed revisions — 11 of the 24 people quoted in the Smoky Mtn News (2/26/14) are current or recent WATR members.
  • Tue, Feb 25, Annual WATR Meeting, When: **6:00-7:30, Where: St. Francis Church, Cherokee.   Paul Borcq, local competitive fly fisherman, spoke about international competition and the uniqueness of the Tuckasegee River.

March:

  • Tue, Mar 11, WATR Input Meeting – Swain,When: **6:00-7:30, Where: BC United Methodist The meeting morphed into the Swain Trash Task Force, with a dozen ardent attendees and more people informing us that they would like to join but had a conflict.   Quick action:   See the clean up on Kirkland’s Creek scheduled for Sat Apr 12.   Diane Cutler volunteered to be the publicity leader.  Many other ideas and tasks agreed upon.  Next meeting 4/1/2014.
